Lake Velence, a true pearl of Central Transdanubia, is situated half way between Budapest and Lake Balaton; it can be easily reached either by train or on the motorway. It is called the Sunshine Lake with good reason: the annual number of sunshine hours is very high – 2050 –, accordingly, the water of the lake can be as warm as 26°C degrees in summer.

You should really stop here and spend a couple of days at one of the most pleasant lakes in Europe. Those who wish to relax and have a rest may enjoy it just as much as those who prefer active recreation and sports, or those who look for culinary delights. You should not miss the summer events around the lake, such as the Orbán Day Mountain Celebration in May, the Velence Summer Music Nights or the hot air balloon parade in autumn. The open-air Beethoven concert of the National Philharmonic Orchestra in the park of Brunszvik Castle at Martonvásár is also a great experience.
The southern shore of the lake is waiting with beaches, boat- and sports equipment rentals for those who wish to bathe, do sports or relax in the Agárd Spa; while the northern shore is ideal for lovers of nature and trekking. The Velence Mountains have a famous destination at Nadap where travellers may enjoy the panorama of the lake or taste special wines in the cellars of Bence Hill and eat a good fish soup in a local restaurant.
The Bird Reserves of the Velence Environmental Protection Area awaits ornithologists and bird-lovers. The Pákozdi Ingókövek Environmental Protection Area is ideal for trekkers, while the lookout tower in the Pákozd-Sukoró Arboretum offers a beautiful panorama of the lake and the reeds. You should also visit the small but entertaining museums in the Lake Velence area, such as the Géza Gárdonyi Memorial House, the Mihály Vörösmarty Memorial House at Kápolnásnyék or the memorial of the Pákozd-Sukoró battle on Mészeg Hill where you can have a good cup of coffee on the terrace of the Tourist Centre.
