The Hermitage, which contains monks’ cells, a church and an abbey building, was built according to the ancient regulations of the Kamaldul order, whose members took a vow of silence. The houses contain bedrooms, workplaces and a miniature chapel with an altar for the religious activity of the hermits. All houses had a small garden. The monks adjusted their daily activities to the sun.
An area enclosed by fences hosts hermitages with white walls, red tiles. The facades represent the crests of the families that built them. Only the bell tower remains from the central church. The complex ends with the main building of the Hermitage. The residence of the provost used to be here; today you’ll find the canteen and guest rooms for visitors and travellers on this location.
In one of the hermitages, used today as a museum, documents can be found on the life of the friars dressed in white who took the vow of silence. Visitors may get acquainted with the secrets and history of the hermitage during guided tours starting every hour.
