Komárom can boast of a network of fortresses, eight forts in all, thanks to its excellent strategic location. During the Napoleonic wars, Franz I. and his court found refuge here when they fled the French ruler during the occupation of Vienna, and Franz I. later decided to make Komárom the strongest military fortress of the Empire.

Fort Monostor was built in many different phases. By the time it was finished in 1871, it was famous for the most up-to-date military technology of its age. However, the engineers did not take into consideration the quick development of the military sciences and the fortress quickly lost its strategic importance. We may say that it was fortunate, as it was never besieged and remained untouched for future generations.
Fort Monostor is a real giant with its 30,000 sqms, 640 halls and a labyrinth. You may stroll for hours up and down its corridors without seeing the sun. The carved stones of the building deserve attention. Their polygonal shape served practical purposes, not artistic ones.
Fort Monostor is waiting for visitors with several exhibitions; the most significant is the Bread Museum. The exhibition shows the bakery that produced food for the fortress and it also shows the products made here. It is amazing that this bakery was able to cater to all the soldiers in the fort.
Nowadays, Fort Monostor is a cultural- and tourism centre. Apart from the exhibitions, it also offers several events. Guided tours of the fortress are available.
