A STUDY ROUTE OF ARCHITECTURAL MONUMENTS IN DUNAÚJVÁROS, A STUDY PATH OF SOCIALIST REALISM
It was almost a decade ago that the Architectural Study Route was conceived. It was when we started to discover buildings that could be regarded as sights in the town. The support of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage was a great help in the implementation of this plan. The realisation of the project and the specification of these buildings contributed to the creation of a Study Route, which broadens the offerings of Dunaújváros, and attracts more visitors.

In 2003, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage invited entries for a competition titled "A support of cultural tours: touristic projects related to common European and / or Hungarian heritage 2003". In the following year, the Study Route of Architectural Monuments in Dunaújváros came into being. The Regional Public Utility Company of European Union and Tourism (Kistérségi Európai Uniós és Idegenforgalmi Kht.) assisted in the organization.
In the first phase of the project work we took several viewpoints into consideration. When planning the study route, on their basis we agreed on the final route plan. One of the viewpoints was the special feature and the variety of the sights on the route, at the same time they had to be found easily. We could not leave the length of the route out of consideration either, since it has an influence on the number of people whishing to take a visit. In the final plan we specified 35 locations and buildings, which are accessible on foot or on bicycle, depending on how much time and energy someone has to explore them. As regards to the buildings, every community living in them has given its written consent to put up signs. Thus, 33 stations out of the planned 35 buildings have remained a part of the route. The citizens recognized the values of the buildings and they were willing to help to carry out the plan.
The specified buildings embrace three periods of architecture. They are socialist realism, modern and a second socialist realist period. The different styles of architecture between the 1950s and the 1980s can be traced very well in the town. Almost all significant architects of the second part of the 20th century are alleged to have worked on the buildings. Following the route a visitor may see buildings ranging from the architecture of older styles to those of the modern era. When planning the route we took into consideration the special features of every single building within the different styles, which defined the final number of buildings. The route diverges to the bank of the Danube, where the observer gets a perfect view of the differences between the Roman and modern parts of the town.
The Study Route of Architectural Monuments starts at Vasmű Square where the fresco of Endre Domanovszky depicting13 ironworkers can be seen. The other outstanding station of the route is the Commercial House, where another mosaic with many figures can be found, which was renovated in 2004. The main street of the town and the buildings in Vasmű Street, such as the residential buildings, the cinema building and a circular-plan clinic, authentically show the architectural styles of the era. The route also includes the Town Hall. An increasing tourist interest can be expected since no other places represent the style of socialist realism in such quantity.
Walking along the study path one may meet architectural works created and constructed by famous designers as well as the town centre built in the style of socialist realism. They get insight into the past, present and future of Dunaújváros. The town centre is homogenous; it has countless monuments of socialist realism, which is unique in Europe. The study path offers a pleasant and useful way for visitors to relax in Dunaújváros.
