1836 was an important year for both Hungarian and international horse breeding. This was the year when the breeding of the Shagya Arabian stallion began, and the history of the Arabian Stud started in Bábolna. This place conserves the Arabian horse breeding traditions in an almost unique fashion in the whole world.

The Arabian stud is conserved in the Bábolna National Stud Farm where high-quality breeding activity is performed. However, the Stud not only conserves traditions, but it also aims to promote them for a wider public.
Accordingly, visitors are welcome with guided tours in the former Szapáry Castle – one of the oldest buildings of the town and centre of the Stud. Guests may get to know the famous stud, its history and see the horse equipments.
One of the most interesting parts of the Stud is the Coach Museum – don’t forget, Bábolna is famous for its five-horse carriages – where one can see different types and origins of coaches from the history of coach riding and horse sports.
The Arabian stud of Bábolna gained its greatest acknowledgement in 1978, when the Association of Arabian Horse Breeders registered the Shagya horse of Bábolna as an independent breed, recognizing the high standards of the breeding activity of the Stud.
