Juhfark, the most famous wine of the Somló wine region, has been called “the wine of wedding nights” for centuries. The legendary wine – a “hungaricum” – is produced in the smallest Hungarian wine region. The Somló wine region is a noble contender with the Tokaj wine region in purity and taste.
The history of the wine region dates back to ancient times. Probably, the Celts and Romans already produced grapes here. However, it saw its heyday only later, in the 18th century, when the Somló wines were the preferred drinks of the Habsburgs and other noble families. The “wine of wedding nights” expression also dates back to these days. According to a legend, the Habsburg archdukes had to drink a glass of Solmó wine before their wedding nights in order to procreate. The wines of Somló were also renowned for their healing power: according to the tradition, they cure anaemia, clean the kidneys and help digestion. Today, in the open cellars of Somló, guests may try other characteristic wines beside Juhfark, such as Furmint, Tramini or Welchriesling (Olaszrizling).
