Veszprém, the Town of Queens, has a thousand years of history, a vivid cultural life and many exciting sights to see. It‘s history dates back to the Age of Conquest: Veszprém came into the possession of the royal family, and its Episcopate was founded in 1001. Tata is the Town of Waters. It deserves this name for having several springs and two lakes – Old Lake and Cseke Lake. We should start our sight seeing tour – we could also travel on the narrow gauge train – from the Water Castle on the shore of Old Lake. It is an astonishing renaissance building from the times of Sigmund of Luxembourg and King Matthias.

The Sunshine Lake: Lake Velence |

Lake Velence, a true pearl of Central Transdanubia, is situated half way between Budapest and Lake Balaton; it can be easily reached either by train or on the motorway. It is called the Sunshine Lake with good reason: the annual number of sunshine hours is very high – 2050 –, accordingly, the water of the lake can be as warm as 26°C degrees in summer.

The largest archaeological park in the Carpathian Basin is situated at the border of present-day Tác. The park hides the ruins of Gorsium, the ancient religious centre of Pannonia.

The history of the town Zirc is linked to the Hungarian history of the Cistercian order. As early as in the 12th century, the members of the order founded an abbey with the support of King Béla the Fourth. Today, Zirc is the Hungarian centre of the order.

The road to Majkpuszta takes us through the wilderness of the northern Vértes. The foundation of the Kamaldul Hermitage on the land of a provostry in the mid 18th century was possible thanks to the gifts of József Esterházy and 16 noble families.

Komárom can boast of a network of fortresses, eight forts in all, thanks to its excellent strategic location. During the Napoleonic wars, Franz I. and his court found refuge here when they fled the French ruler during the occupation of Vienna, and Franz I. later decided to make Komárom the strongest military fortress of the Empire.

The study trail which guides the visitor through the architecture of Dunaújváros is new in its current form. The surveying and systemizing of the city’s buildings started only a decade ago.

A unique tour can be made in the Porcelain Complex. Visitors can, first of all, watch a film on the triumphal spread of the mythic porcelain of Herend; then the process of porcelain production, from shaping to painting, is presented in the miniature manufactory. In the coffee shop and restaurant of the porcelain works, food is served on original Herend porcelain, and one can also buy the world-famous products in the shop.

1836 was an important year for both Hungarian and international horse breeding. This was the year when the breeding of the Shagya Arabian stallion began, and the history of the Arabian Stud started in Bábolna. This place conserves the Arabian horse breeding traditions in an almost unique fashion in the whole world.

The wine of wedding nights |

Juhfark, the most famous wine of the Somló wine region, has been called “the wine of wedding nights” for centuries. The legendary wine – a “hungaricum” – is produced in the smallest Hungarian wine region. The Somló wine region is a noble contender with the Tokaj wine region in purity and taste.

Celts and Romans already produced grape in the Mór wine region. The first written record of the locality comes from the times of Béla I. During the Turkish period, the grape culture disappeared and was only revived in the 17th century thanks to the German settlers and the Capuchin friars who came with them. They brought new methods in grape production and planted the ezerjó type as well.

Pálinka production and consumption has centuries of history in Hungary. Distillations were already consumed in the 14th century. Then, they were called aqua vitae – water of life.
